Why Yankees now need to worry about Aaron Judge

Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge got hurt in Friday’s 4-1 win over the Mets at Citi Field. What happened?

NEW YORK — Add Aaron Judge to the Yankees‘ list of injury worries.

The right fielder said his thumb was sore after a 4-1 win over the Mets at Citi Field on Friday night.

He’ll get tests on it before returning to Queens for Saturday night’s game, he said.

“It feels good,” he said. “It’s sore, (but) it’s not too bad right now. We’ll see in the morning.”

Judge’s thumb wasn’t wrapped when was standing at his locker postgame.

Judge slid feet first to into second base break up a first-inning double play. Greg Bird had hit a grounder to Mets first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who fired it to third baseman Todd Frazier covering second base due to a defensive shift. Judge winced and shook his thumb.

“Not too concerned,” he said. “When I got up, I felt a little something. Just kind of pulled on it and tugged on it and it felt good to go.”

Manager Aaron Boone said, “He jammed himself on that slide. Obviously that caught our attention. Anytime you see Judgey because he’s not dramatic at all and you see him reacting there for a second, you just hold your breath. But he checked out all right. He went up in the cage and hit and was OK. He said he was good to go and strength wise in that thumb and everything was solid. So hopefully we dodged a bullet there.”

Judge stayed in the rest of the game after head trainer Steve Donohue taped the thumb. He finished 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly that led to the Yankees’ other injury. With the bases loaded, starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka sprinted from third base to home and scored but immediately came out of the game complaining of soreness in both hamstrings.

Judge was optimistic about his own injury.

“It was sore but we were able to tape it up and keep the swelling down a little bit,” he said.
