A sewage leak seeped into the Yankees’ clubhouse and spread through George M. Steinbrenner Field, forcing fans to walk around foul-smelling pools of water during a spring training game that was supposed to be about baseball.
Spring training is supposed to be simple.
Sunshine. Prospects. Radar gun readings that spark debates nobody will remember by June.
Saturday in Tampa? It turned into something nobody had on their bingo card.
While the Yankees were busy dismantling the Detroit Tigers in a 20–3 rout, a sewage leak inside George M. Steinbrenner Field quietly — and then not so quietly — became the story of the day.
Apparently, two sewer lines broke outside the main GMS Field entrance just before today’s game.
Things got progressively worse.
“It’s not great…it’s all over the place,” Aaron Boone said of areas of the Yankee clubhouse.

The Smell Hit Before the News Did
Fans didn’t learn about the issue from an announcement.
They smelled it.
By the late innings, the stench had reached the concourse. Security directed foot traffic around dirty pools of water outside the stadium. Portable fencing blocked off affected areas. The downstairs section of the team’s two-level store was shut down.
This wasn’t a minor plumbing issue hidden behind a maintenance door.
This was an “avoid that area” situation in a packed spring training environment.
Inside the Clubhouse: “It’s a Mess”
The leak began in a bathroom inside the Yankees’ clubhouse — and then spread.
That matters because spring training clubhouses aren’t just locker rooms. They’re workspaces. Players leave cleats, gloves, and equipment on carpeted floors. When sewage reaches those areas, it’s more than unpleasant — it’s disruptive.
One Yankees player summed it up bluntly while walking out:
“It’s a mess in there.”
Interviews normally held inside the clubhouse were moved to a hallway — which also carried the smell. Aaron Judge, Spencer Jones, Carlos Lagrange, and Aaron Boone all met reporters there instead.
You don’t relocate the captain’s media session unless the situation leaves you no choice.
Boone: “It’s Not Great. It’s All Over the Place.”
Aaron Boone didn’t try to spin it.
“It’s not great. It’s all over the place,” Boone said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it cleaned up overnight and back in business tomorrow.”
Then came the line that captured the absurdity of the moment:
“Life gets you sometimes. We’ll get through it.”
Baseball managers talk about adversity all the time. They usually mean injuries or slumps.
Saturday, it meant plumbing.
The Quote of the Day Came From the Yankees
If there was any doubt the organization understood how bizarre this looked, a Yankees spokesperson delivered the line that will live forever in spring training lore:
“It’s spring training for the toilets, too.”
The spokesperson added that Tampa’s Department of Public Works was aware of the broader sewage issue in the Steinbrenner Field vicinity.
Workers removed a manhole cover behind the pond near the ballpark entrance as part of the repair effort. The sewage appeared to have reached the pond area as well.
Not exactly the postcard image MLB prefers in February.
And Still — Baseball Happened
Lost in the chaos: the Yankees scored 20 runs.
The clubhouse was compromised. The concourse smelled. Fans were stepping around dirty water. Parts of the stadium were closed.
And the game still moved forward like baseball always does.
Prospects took swings. Pitchers got their work in. Fans kept score.
