Yankees activate Adam Warren from DL, farm out Tommy Kahnle | What it means

The Yankees made a roster move after their 7-4 win in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader against the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich. on Monday, June 4, 2018 (6/4/18).

DETROIT — The Yankees‘ Triple-A club has another proven big leaguer heading its way.

In another surprise roster move, reliever Tommy Kahnle will be joining infielders Ronald Torreyes and Brandon Drury on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Kahnle was demoted between games of the Yankees’ day-night doubleheader on Monday to make room for reliever Adam Warren, who was activated from the disabled list after being sidelined since April 21 with a right back strain.

The Yanks’ announced the roster decision in an email and via social media after their 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers in the first of two at Comerica Park.

The transaction was announced a few minutes after Yankees manager Aaron Boone held his post-game news conference, so there’s been no immediate reaction on Kahnle being farmed out.

Kahnle was the Yankees’ choice to go over two righties who seemed to be more likely candidates for an option, Jonathan Holder and A.J. Cole.

Holder, who is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 17 games, was farmed out earlier this season before returning. Cole is 1-0 with an 0.82 ERA in six outings, but was 1-1 with a 13.06 ERA for Washington before being traded to the Yankees for cash on April 26.

Kahnle, 28, was one of the Yankees’ best relievers last season after being acquired in a July trade from the Chicago White Sox, but he struggled this season before and after he was on the DL from April 17 to May 25 with right shoulder tendonitis.

In eight games, the righty is 1-0 with a 7.00 ERA with 11 runs allowed, seven of them earned, over nine innings with 10 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Since coming off the DL, Kahnle pitched only twice in 11 days. His first outing was a really bad one in which he allowed four runs, two earned, over two-thirds of an inning on two hits and two walks facing the LA Angels on May 26, but he followed that with a 1-2-3 inning pitching against Houston on May 28.
