Yankees call up lefty Ryan Bollinger | 5 things you need to know

Ryan Bollinger is heading to the Yankees bullpen.

The Yankees selected the contract of the Double-A lefty on Wednesday, making the pitcher available in Texas on Wednesday night vs. the Rangers.

Here’s what you need to know about the newest addition to manager Aaron Boone’s pitching staff.

Two-way player: Bollinger has experience as a pitcher and first baseman in the minors. In parts of nine minor league campaigns, Bollinger has posted a .457 OPS across 25 plate appearances. That included time in Independent Ball. This isn’t Shohei Ohtani, but Bollinger has an idea of what to do at the dish.

Journeyman: Bollinger was drafted in the 47th round of the 2009 draft by the Phillies, but has yet to crack a big league roster. The now 27-year-old also spent time in the White Sox organization before the Yankees signed him.

Excelling at Trenton: So far this season, Bollinger has shined at Double-A Trenton in the Yankees organization. At the conclusion of play on May 22, Bollinger owned a 0.90 ERA for the Thunder.

Trade rumors

Control artist: Unlike many pitchers that debut in 2018, Bollinger isn’t a huge strikeout arm. Throughout nine seasons in pro ball, the southpaw owns a SO/9 rate of 8.1. But that’s been accompanied by a BB/9 rate of just 2.6, leading to a SO/BB rate of better than 3.00.

Overseas star: Bollinger spent part of 2015, and all of 2016-17 with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles of the Canadian-American Association. He also spent part of 2014 with St. Paul and Winnipeg.
