Yankees’ CC Sabathia: (Hopefully) 1 more year, then I’m retiring

Yankees starting pitcher says he hopes to play in 2019 — and then call it a career.

NEW YORK — One more and done.

Or at least that’s what CC Sabathia hopes.

The Yankees‘ veteran starting pitcher said that as long as he’s capable, he hopes to play in 2019, and then after that his plan would be to retire.

As long as Sabathia is “healthy and I feel good,” he said before Friday’s game vs. the Mets at Yankee Stadium, “I want to play next year and then that would be it.”

Asked if that meant he would plan to retire following the 2019 season, Sabathia confirmed.

Clint Frazier might have a concussion — again

The way he’s pitched, Sabathia has looked like he could go a few more years, managing a degenerative condition in his right knee that has seemed to threaten his career more than once in recent years.

The 37-year-old lefty has been the Yankees’ most reliable starting pitcher not named Luis Severino. In 18 starts, Sabatia has posted a 3.51 ERA — his lowest mark at the All-Star break since 2012. He’s 6-4 and he’s thrown 100 innings.

Sabathia and the Yankees agreed to a one-year, $10-million deal in the offseason.

Sabathia has played 18 years in the big leagues, winning a World Series with the Yankees in 2009 and a Cy Young with the Indians in 2007.

A six-time All-Star, Sabathia has been one of the leading voices in the Yankees’ clubhouse for years. He’s the unquestioned top dog of the pitching staff and, alongside Brett Gardner, appears a de facto team captain.

Earlier this year, he told the New York Post that he would would retire if the Yankees in a World Series this season, but that doesn’t seem set in stone.
