Yankees’ CC Sabathia to DL, Ronald Torreyes called up | What it means

The Yankees made a bunch of roster moves before the game against the Mets on Monday, August 13, 2018 (8/13/18) at Yankee Stadium, with CC Sabathia going to the disabled list and Ronald Torreyes and George Kontos getting called up.

NEW YORK — The Yankees‘ starting rotation has taken yet another hit.

Veteran lefty CC Sabathia will head to the disabled list with right knee inflammation. The 38-year-old didn’t complain of pain after throwing six scoreless innings in a win over the Rangers at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

Sabathia landed awkwardly on the knee while trying to make a play on a comebacker but seemed fine during the game.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team was in the process of making roster moves before Monday’s game against the Mets at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees also called up reliever George Kontos and utility man Ronald Torreyes from Triple-A. They sent first baseman Luke Voit to Triple-A and moved left-handed Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day disabled list.

What Sabathia’s injury means

No telling just yet. The Yankees haven’t explained the severity of the injury.

Sabathia won’t be eligible to return until at least Aug. 24, when the team starts a series in Boston.

Since Sonny Gray pitched in relief of Sabathia on Sunday, he could line up to slide into Sabathia’s spot and back into the rotation. It’s unclear whom else the Yankees might consider.

Losing Sabathia for any amount of time is a clear blow. He’s behind only Luis Severino in terms of season ERA at 3.32. He’s 7-4 in 22 starts. It’s Sabathia’s second DL stint of the year. He also suffered a right hip strain.
