Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier felt dizzy after making a diving attempt at a flyball during a Triple-A game in Columbus on Thursday night.
NEW YORK — Clint Frazier’s spring training concussion was a scary ideal ordeal for the Yankees’ second-year outfielder because his symptoms would come and go for almost two months.
By late April, Frazier was feeling good again and beginning an impressive first half that included a lot of Triple-A success and some big hits during his 15 Yankees games that were spread over 22 days in four different call-ups.
Ranking pitchers Yankees could trade for with odds
And now his season is in limbo again.
More dizziness returned for Frazier on Thursday night following what seemed to be an innocent attempt at making a diving catch in center field in the first inning of Scranton Wilkes-Barre’s 7-3 International League victory in Columbus.
Frazier left for a pinch-hitter in the second inning.
“He wasn’t feeling too good before the game started and that kind of didn’t help,” RailRiders manager Bobby Mitchell told the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader. “His head just wasn’t … He said he felt a little foggy and stuff like that.
“We decided to get him out of there. He just wasn’t feeling very good and so he’s being evaluated to see exactly what the issue was.”
These obviously are nervous times for Frazier, who is one of the Yankees’ top young players.
On Feb. 24, Frazier suffered a concussion crashing into the left-field wall during a Yankees’ Grapefruit League game in Bradenton, Pa., and after many weeks of progress and setbacks, he finally began his season playing a rehab game for the high A Tampa Tarpons on April 29.
For the Yankees, while their first concern obviously is Frazier’s health, this issue could take away one of their biggest trade chips as they attempt to deal for a top-of-the-rotation starter before the July 31 trade deadline.
Frazier’s name has been mentioned in trade rumors along with high A center fielder prospect Estevan Florial, the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect.
Frazier, 23, is hitting .311 with 10 homers, 21 RBI and a .963 OPS in 48 Triple-A games. For the Yankees, he hit .265 with one RBI in 34 at-bats during call-ups from May 15-20, June 4-5, June 18-25 and July 7-16.
Meantime, Frazier is a candidate to be placed on Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 7-day concussion disabled list even if Thursday’s dizziness isn’t deemed a big deal following medical exams.
“There’s a chance he could go on the DL just because he’s had the concussion syndrome thing and you want to be careful with that,” Mitchell said.
