Yankees get the Didi Gregorius news they need — for now

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius (bruised heel) saw the team’s doctor during a 6-2 loss to the White Sox at Yankee Stadium on Monday.

NEW YORK — The Yankees haven’t been hearing what they want from the doctor whenever right fielder Aaron Judge sees him about his fractured wrist.

They got better news on shortstop Didi Gregorius and his bruised heel on Monday.

Gregorius told reporters his visit with the Yankees’ team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, went well.

It came during a 6-2 loss to the White Sox at Yankee Stadium.

“Everything is progressing the way it’s supposed to be,” he said at his locker in the clubhouse.

Who is Luke Voit?

When might he back? He hopes it’s “sooner rather than later,” he said.

Gregorius added that he could probably play as soon as he’s eligible to come off the 10-day disabled list but that he didn’t know if the Yankees might prefer him to play in minor-league rehab games first.

Gregorius said he’s been hitting in the cage inside Yankee Stadium.

The next big test: Running. The team hasn’t cleared to him to do that yet, but he hopes it happens soon.

Gleyber Torres, usually the second baseman, has started at shortstop in the seven games Gregorius has missed. Torres also took over for Gregorius at Torres’ natural position after Gregorius got pulled from the Aug. 19 game at home in which he collided with Blue Jays first baseman Kendrys Morales and suffered the injury.

Manager Aaron Boone said he hadn’t spoken to Gregorius about his doctor visit after the Yankees’ loss on Monday.

Judge still hasn’t been able to swing a bat and seems at least more than a week away from returning.
