Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton ends drought, joins 300-homer club

Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton became the 147th member of the 300-homer club on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

NEW YORK Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton went parts of 12 games and 40 at-bats gunning for his 300th career homer.

It finally came Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, and his two-run blast off Detroit Tigers left-hander Francisco Liriano was an impressive one.

With the Yankees trailing 1-0, Stanton lined a 3-1 knee-high fastball that was left over the outside corner of the plate into the right-field seats for a no-doubter.

Yankees fans were tough on Stanton early into his first season with the club due to some April struggles, but he got a standing ovation after No. 300.

With some encouragement from teammates, Stanton acknowledged the cheers with a curtain call.

Stanton became the 147th player to reach the 300-homer plataeu. He did it in his 1,119th career game, which makes him the fifth fastest behind Ralph Kiner, Ryan Howard, Juan Gonzalez and Alex Rodriguez. The 28-year-old also is the ninth fastest in age to get to 30..

Stanton hit a career-high 59 homers last season for the Miami Marlins, one in which he was named National League MVP, and this year leads the Yankees with 33.

Stanton hit No. 32 for the season and No. 299 for his career on Aug. 18 against Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Sean Reid-Foley in an 11-5 Yankees win at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 18, then he went into a slump.

Stanton went into Thursday’s game batting .158 (6-for-38) during his 10-game homer drought, then he grounded out to shortstop in his first at-bat against Liriano.
