Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton tired and not producing, but wants to remain ironman

Giancarlo Stanton has been slumping, and while he admits being tired from starting the Yankees’ last 82 games, he wants to keep playing every day.

NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton just missed finally hitting career homer No. 300 in the Yankees’ 4-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

His first time up, Stanton lined a shot into the left-field seats at Yankee Stadium that was foul by a few feet.

His next time up, Stanton laced another bomb to left that had home run distance but went foul.

It was an unlucky night from start to finish for Stanton, who also lined out to third and scorched a grounder to third that became an out in going 0-for-3 with a walk and strikeout.

Stanton took it in stride.

“It’s baseball,” he said. “You’re going to hit balls at people sometimes. You’re going to be off for a game or two at times.”

Although making a lot of solid contact on Wednesday, Stanton has been off a lot of late, as he’s 2-for-26 with no homers, one RBI, 11 whifffs and five walks in the Yankees‘ last seven games. Also, he has no homers in 11 games since hitting his team-best 32nd of the season and 299th of his career on Aug. 18 off Toronto Blue Jays righty Sean Reid-Foley.

Why the sudden lack of production from Stanton, who had been hot for a couple months?

He’s spent.

Stanton’s start on Wednesday night was his 82nd in a row and he’s been in the lineup for all but two of the Yankees’ first 133 games.

Granted Stanton did a lot of DHing before Austin Judge went on the DL and this month due to a tight hamstring, but he admits he could use a day off.

He doesn’t want one though, not with Judge still sidelined plus the Yankees’ lineup also missing two other big bats, shortstop Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez.

“We’ll throw (a day off) in there when we need (to), but we’re beat up right now,” Stanton said. “I’ve got to be a staple in there and help try to push us through this hard time. We’re all tired, all beat up, but everyone else is playing the same game. Just got to keep pushing through.”
