Yankees injury updates | Latest on Gleyber Torres, Jacoby Ellsbury

Yankees All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres is close to returning from a hip strain that’s had him on the disabled list since early July.

NEW YORK — The Yankees should be getting All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres back by the middle of next week.

As for center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, it’s looking more and more like he’ll spend the entire season on the disabled list.

Manager Aaron Boone issued updates on both Friday before the Yankees began a weekend Subway Series against the Mets at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees can’t wait to get Torres back, and his tentative return date is next Wednesday for the finale of a three-game series in Tampa Bay.

Sidelined since July 5 with a right groin strain, Torres has been given the green light from Yankees doctors to begin playing, so he’s been sent to Tampa for rehab games with the high A Tampa Tarpons.

According to Boone, the plan is for Torres to play Florida State League games on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, then come off the DL for Wednesday’s Yankees-Rays game at Tropicana Field, who is just a 10-minute drive from Tampa in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Meantime, Ellsbury still is in Tampa rehabbing from hip and lower back issues, which are just two of several injuries that have had him shut down since late in spring training.

“He’s not during baseball activity right now,” Boone said. “He’s still working on stuff with his hip, with his (sacroiliac joint).”

Boone was asked on Friday if it’s getting close to the point where Ellsbury has no shot of playing this season.

“I don’t necessarily think we’re there yet,” Boone responded. “I think we hold out hope that he can get back at some point. I don’t think you close that door yet, but when that is I’m not quite sure.”
