Yankees’ Jonathan Loaisiga loses no-hitter in 6th inning

Yankees rookie right-hander puts on show against Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

PHILADELPHIA — The Yankees‘ first visit to Citizens Bank Park since the 2009 World Series was somewhat memorable, too.

Rookie right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga was no-hitting the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night before Jorge Alfaro started the home sixth with a line single to right field.

The Yankees won the game 4-1 to snap a season-long, three-game losing streak.

With his pitch count at 86, Loaisiga was pulled with one out and two on in the Phillies sixth, then David Robertson came up to retire two batters in a row to keep it a 2-0 ballgame.

“We weren’t going to go much over 90 (pitches) with him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I would have had to answer tougher questions if he hadn’t given up that hit because he was coming out.

“We were hoping to get him through that sixth because his pitch count was pretty good, but we weren’t going to go much over 90 at all with him. And I felt like he maybe started to tire a little bit when he lost those two guys in that inning, but all in all, what a really good performance.”

Making just his third start since a call-up from Double-A Trenton, Loaisiga was perfect through four innings and allowed just one baserunner through five, a leadoff walk in the fifth to Carlos Santana.

Loaisiga ended up pitching a one-hitter over 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks in lowering his ERA to 1.93.

No Phillies came close to a hit before Alfaro started the sixth by lacing a 3-2, 98-mph fastball into right for a clean single.

Alfaro, in fact, was the first Phillie to hit the ball out of the infield.

After the Phillies first hit, Loaisiga walked pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr to put two on with nobody out.

Loaisiga retired the next inning Cesar Hernandez on a groundball to second that moved up both runners, but Robertson got out of the jam by striking out Rhys Hopkins and retiring Odubel Herrera on a groundball to second.

Loaisiga started his nighty by striking out Phillies leadoff hitter Carlos Hernandez and his K total was up to seven once he struck out the side in a 1-2-3 fourth.

Facing Phillies righty Vince Velasquez, rookie second baseman Gleyber Torres doubled in a run in the second inning and Aaron Judge lined a solo homer into the first row of the left-field seats with one out in the fifth, his 20th.

A 23-year-old from Nicaragua, Loaisiga began the season pitching in high A ball for the Tampa Tarpons. He was promoted to Double-A Trenton after going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in four Florida State League starts, then was 3-1 with a 4.32 ERA in six Eastern League starts before double jumping to the big leagues on June 15.

Loaisiga was called up when the Yankees needed a starter to replace injured righty Masahiro Tanaka, who is on the DL with right and left hamstring strains.
