Yankees infielder Ronald Torreyes’ wife had to undergo medical tests while he was on the temporary inactive list.
NEW YORK — Ronald Torreyes didn’t want to get into details, but he did provide the best one of them all:
His wife, Anarelys, is OK.
“The most I want to say about that is, you know, thank God everything is fine, she’s fine,” Torreyes said before the Yankees lost to the Rays, 6-1, at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
“I’m happy that things worked out very well. And I’m happy that nothing bad happened to her because she’s been here with me throughout my career. So, just happy that she’s fine.”
The pair have a son named Moises.
Torreyes spent almost a month (June 26 – July 23) on the minor-league temporary inactive list.
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Bobby Mitchell told reporters Torreyes had to return to New York City to be with his wife, who had to undergo medical tests.
Since then, the Yankees and Torreyes have been mum about the situation, with Mitchell and Yankees manager Aaron Boone declining to provide details.
The Yankees re-called Torreyes on Monday. He started at second base Wednesday.
After being the Yankees’ utility player in 2016 and 2018, he was sent to Triple-A for the first time since 2015 earlier this year and has spent a considerable amount of time there.
Here’s the rest of Torreyes’ talk with reporters Wednesday.
What’s this season been like for you?
“It’s been an interesting year for me. It’s something you go through as a professional athlete, especially in baseball. Sometimes you’re in the big leagues for a little bit, sometimes you’re sent down for a little bit. When I went down, the mentality was to keep on doing what I’ve been doing up here in the big leagues, keep doing the same thing down there. Keep working hard to give myself the best opportunity to come back.”
Was it hard getting sent down?
“The first couple days were tough, but at the same time, you open your eyes and you see that you’re still doing what you love to do, which is play baseball. You keep grinding. Keep preparing yourself as best as you can and just waiting for that phone call again to come back to the big leagues.”
What has all the support from the fans meant to you?
“Fans have a loud voice. When I was down there, I received a lot of messages from a lot of fans. Encouraging words, saying keep doing your thing, you’ll be back. … it serves as motivation to see that somehow you matter to some many different people, so many people you don’t know.”
What do you hope to bring to the Yankees?
“I just want to keep doing what I’ve been doing for this team, being there for the team in any way possible, being there for my teammates, bringing a little bit of energy and joy to the clubhouse, to the team. That’s it. That’s something that I’ve been doing since I got here to this team and I just want to be able to continue to do that.”
