Yankees trainer explains pulling ‘crazy,’ ‘huge’ moth from umpire’s ear

Yankees trainer Steve Donohue pulled a giant month out of umpire Bruce Dreckman’s left ear Wednesday night.

NEW YORK — Yankees trainer Steve Donohue has seen plenty of wild things in his 30 years with the organization.

Wednesday night was something else.

Donohue had to help second base umpire Bruce Dreckman yank a giant moth out of his left ear in the ninth inning of a 7-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago.

Donohue broke it down while with the YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits.

Take us through it …

Well, the umpire, at first I didn’t see him. And then someone said, Hey, the umpire is coming this way, you better go try and help him out and I didn’t know what was wrong with him. And he says, ‘A bug just flew into my ear!’ Naturally, I’m expecting a small gnat or a mosquito or something. so I tried with a cotton-tip applicator and nothing is coming out and he’s like, you got tweezers? I’m like, All right, let’s get them. I got them out of the kit and I started in there a little bit and I was like, ‘Look, you might want to try this yourself because I don’t want to dig too deep. He tried it, he started feeling something, I helped him get it out. I don’t know if he was “Bats in the Bellfrey,” but that was a big moth, I’m going to tell you. This thing was flying.

What was the reaction of the people around you in the dugout?

I can’t repeat the language. It was crazy. It was nuts. He had to be feeling terrible because this thing was big and flapping and I can’t imagine what was going on inside his head. Though, some of these umpires, I don’t know what’s going on inside their heads anyway.
