Yankees ride J.A. Happ, Miguel Andujar to Game 1 rout over Orioles | Rapid reaction

The Yankees hit five homers in blowing out the Orioles 10-3 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Oriole Park.

NEW YORK –Finally, the Yankees did to the Baltimore Orioles what they should have been doing all season long Saturday in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader at Oriole Park.

After falling behind early, the Yankees quickly rebounded and went on to blow out the Orioles 10-3 to make it two straight in this four-game series.

Yankees injury news: Latest on Judge, Gregorius, Sanchez, Frazier, etc.

Left-hander J.A. Happ was very good again allowing two runs over six innings to stay unbeaten as a Yankee, third baseman Miguel Andujar strengthened his AL Rookie of the Year candidacy by going 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI, and Luke Voit followed his two-homer breakout game by contributing an RBI single playing first base.

About time the Yankees had their way with the 37-92 O’s, who entered the series having split the first 12 games of the series.

The Yankees will try to sweep the Orioles in Game 2, which has a 7:05 p.m. start time.

In Game, 1 Renato Nunez’s two-run single in the second off Happ staked the O’s to a 2-1 lead, but the Yanks stormed back to score four in the third, two in the four and one more in the fifth to build a six-run lead.

In the fifth, Aaron Hicks tied the game with a single, then Andujar followed with a three-run homer to left-center, his 21st of the season.

The Yankees finished with four homers, as Brett Gardner hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his 11th, Gleyber Torres led off the eighth with his 19th and Hicks hit his 21st in the ninth with nobody on.

Voit got his second start in a row at first base over slumping starter Greg Bird and was 1-for-3 with a run-scoring hit in the fifth plus a walk. He’s now hitting .308 in nine games since the Yankees acquired him in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on July 29.

Meantime, Happ improved to 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in five starts with the Yankees since he was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in a July 26 trade.

Happ (15-6) was pulled after six innings after 107 pitches having allowed just the two second-inning runs and five hits while striking out nine and walking one.

Happ’s pitch count was up to 51 through two innings, but he was more economic in allowing just two baserunners over his final four frames, both singles.

Luis Cessa, called up from Double-A Trenton on Saturday to be the Yankees’ 26 man for the double-dip, worked the final three innings and allowed just one run in picking up his first career save.

NOTABLE

— Giancarlo Stanton was robbed of his 300th career homer in the sixth when Orioles 5-foot-8 rookie center fielder reached over the wall in center to make a great leaping catch.

— Right fielder Shane Robinson was 2-for-4 hitting out of the No. 9 hole after entering the game in a 1-for-27 slump over 15 games since Aug. 1.

— Catcher Gary Sanchez began a rehab assignment by playing a rookie level Saturday in Clearwater, Fla, and 0-for-3 with a walk as the designated hitter for the Gulf Coast League Yankees East in a 4-1 win over the GCL Phillies East. This was Sanchez’ first game since July 23, the day before he went on the DL for the second time with a right groin strain.
