Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka suffered injuries to both of his hamstring while scoring a run in Friday’s win over the Mets.
NEW YORK — A day after hurting both of his hamstrings running the bases, Yankees No. 2 starter Masahiro Tanaka was put on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday.
His replacement?
Utility infielder Ronald Torreyes is back from a short and very surprising demotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
How Yankees feel about Chapman pitching with left knee tendinitis
Although the Yankees are calling Tanaka’s hamstring strains mild, The injuries appears to be serious because he said Saturday he’s not sure if he will be back before the All-Star break.
“I can’t specifically give you any days, but the goal is to come back as soon as possible,” Tanaka said through a translator.
Tanaka was hurt in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 4-1 win over the Mets on Friday night while scoring the tying run from third base on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge.
This roster move has the Yankees’ again carrying 13 position players and 12 pitchers, which is how they began the season, but GM Brian Cashman recently stated that the club indicated to keep going with an extra bullpen piece.
It’s possible that Torreyes is just returning for the final two games of this weekend’s Subway Series against the Mets because there is no designated hitter for interleague games played in National League ballparks.
The Yankees have yet to announce a replacement for Tanaka in their rotation, but they can get away with going with four starters until next Saturday due to Monday’s off day.
It’s likely that the Yankees will call up a starter from Triple-A to fill in for Tanaka. Possibilities include three arms who are not on the organization’s 40-man roster, top pitching prospect Justin Sheffield, David Hale and Josh Rogers.
Sheffield and Rogers are lefties with no big-league experience, while Hale is a righty who has pitched in 69 games as a major leaguer, 20 as a starter.
Hale was up with the Yankees earlier this season twice and also pitched one game for Minnesota.
Torreyes was the victim of a roster crunch when he was sent to the minors on May 26 hitting .339 in 22 games for the Yankees. In Triple-A, he hit just .194 in nine games with seven hits in 36 at-bats.
