[Music] what is going on everybody i’m here with the one and only kevin kernan of ball nine formerly new york post kevin how you doing today doing fantastic pete uh just another day in paradise down here in florida oh man i’m actually i’m actually heading towards florida very soon next couple of months well if you’re insane augustine stop by uh actually my son has a pretty good uh pretty good restaurant august oh there we go of course and it’s got a wall of beer it’s one of these places where you pour your own beer wine uh it’s really cool you give them a card put the card in the wall they give you a card and uh you tap whatever you want no bartenders if you want two ounces or 15 ounces it’s right there in front of you oh man sounds good so everybody listening there you go st augustine you know where to go to so kevin jumping right into it you wrote a tremendous article and i got to tell you man um i immediately reached out to my friends at baldwin i said i got to get kevin on because it was my thoughts and i think a lot of yankee fans thoughts truly summed up in one article you start out immediately by saying why rock the boat and it’s amazing because this team has gotten into a comfort zone of being mediocre truly and i think that goes back to you you even mentioned you said you know you weren’t surprised when aaron boone came back so first i just want to say i mean i was right there with you the wild card game we were alive for about the whole game and i remember telling my team i said guys we all know they should go in a different direction but they won’t we know they won’t so i just want to get your thoughts initially on the return of aaron boone well you know that yeah i i titled the article boondoggled uh because that’s exactly what it is it’s a boondoggle and it’s not necessarily aaron boone’s fault he is who he is and i’ve known aaron for years i know his father bob boone obviously i go all the way back to his grandfather you know his grandfather ray bl when i worked in san diego ray was at the games every night because ray was still a scout for many years great scout so i know this is a third generation baseball family and i know what they’re all about baseball wise yet boone is about none of this when he manages the yankees he’s just whatever brian castro wants to marry he he’s basically in my mind and i saw it develop over time because i personally like aaron boone and you hear that a lot i like the guy but yes to be honest with you now i really don’t you know i like her not dislike i don’t like i don’t respect him like i used to because he knows what’s right and what’s wrong in baseball he doesn’t have the guts to stand up for himself so how can he stand up for the team he’s he’s totally a country club manager you watch yankees and i’ve watched them through the years spring training and i pick on little things pete one of the things that makes me good at my job is i know baseball i played baseball through college it wasn’t a major school but i was always a good hitter always and it’s a long time ago but nothing changes it’s still the same game so i came into baseball as a reporter understanding the game understanding the nuances of the game then you know i cover all these guys i said i spent 10 years in san diego those 10 years almost every day i’m talking hitting with tony gwynn if you can’t if you can’t pick up uh you know hitting tips from tony gwynn then and fielding tips you know one little thing tony before we went to any game on the road especially an eastern division game he would always take a coach with him go out to the right field corner and have that coach hit him a bucket or two of balls just off the wall to see how the wall played in all my years traveling with the yankees i rarely saw that yeah really that’s the guy working to get better so this gets back to my point of small things they like boone because he lets him it’s like jack mckee and uh you know jack’s a good friend of mine 91 years old i spoke to him last night matter of fact and he said he wasn’t talking about booze specifically but he knows bob boone too because he was with the uh nats as well and jack’s a special advisor there he said these guys like their managers be and they say oh i got the manager’s got my back that’s that’s code for the manager doesn’t push me right yeah of course yeah and so that’s that’s the essence with aaron boone he’s he’s comfortable he’s all about uh you know we compete our compete was great i don’t know where compete became that kind of word right their compete wasn’t great and i’m going to give you one specific example because i talk in specifics that’s why they can’t come back and nail me other than saying you know i’m critical but i talk in truths and i always have and if boom was doing great i would say it i i this is nothing personal no personal agenda one specific and every yankee fan go back and look the video and uh judges on first base stanton hits the fly ball off the wall the line drive fly ball we already saw earlier what that happens you know that it’s not going out you know and so you know you you you should be running if you look at the overhead camera view judge kind of stands up and looks at the ball right like a secondary lead secondary leads are huge yeah in baseball especially now more than ever so he gets no secondary lead he takes a bad turn of second he takes a a mediocre turn of third and he’s thrown out at home and everybody blames phil nevin and ball went off the wall went past the left fielder uh kiki hernandez did a great job backing it up but he made a skip through the shortstop and then bogart stewart strike at home kind of it was in many ways to me it’s kind of like uh full circle it’s the flip play but a different example of it right and it shows what team is hustling and which team is not that secondary league was all on judge it’s all on boone he hasn’t been teaching it all year let’s flash back to late late in the season laboratories strikes out ball goes to the backstop he jogs to first base thrown out when he should be standing on first base reggie willetts the first base coach and this is the things i look at a game when i watch a game i watch with different other writers i watch regular wolves turn around and just walk right to the bench yep didn’t say nothing to him anything nothing and there’s ways to do it you can be tough guy you can be hard ass you can be in his face and say hey or you can put him a pat on the back and say hey what are you doing there kid but if it were me i’d be in his face yeah and that’s my job and if they want to fire me for doing my job then that’s them but then but boone doesn’t say a word to them nope so my point is all these little things caught up yes the at-bats the at-bats and then you have an enabler like ryan cashman i’m going to throw one stack because again they can’t argue the stats yankees with runners in scoring position this year we all know what a disaster was 26 baseball 238 they’re all trying to jack the ball out but again this is what makes me different pete i hate to give you such a long answer but it’s very important for the listeners to understand this the yankees the thing i look at you know where i go and nobody else goes and again i’m not against numbers even though i rail on the nerds all the time right when i was with uh you know when i covered the padres mckean was a huge numbers guy he’s a stock market guy you know he he’s old school baseball old-school stock market guy so he he believes in numbers too and i believe in numbers too but there’s got to be certain numbers that are more important than others that i look at so i go to and everybody can check this out in a sense the yankees were dead writers of scoring position we know how bad they were but here’s the stat that i want to throw at you they were dead last with in scoring runners in scoring position on doubles doubles to me is a cute a huge stack because doubles is when you’re hitting the ball from corner to you know the whole outfield right and a guy that’s hitting doubles is a guy that’s thinking about his team first he’s not trying to jack it out you know home runs are great we all love home runs but if you’re getting a double with runners in scoring position you’re really doing your job right scoring the run you’re putting more guys in mine the yankees all year had 47 doubles with runners in scoring position that’s pathetic and that that was dead last time you know who they tied with they tied with the pirates that’s how bad they were the pirates had as many doubles with runners in scoring position as the yankees so that’s one little stat that gives you the big picture that’s why i ripped on boom boom needed to get tough with these guys he didn’t and spring training uh it’s like i said it’s a country club but that’s happening throughout baseball it’s not just baseball right and brian cashman enabled him and brian cashman got exactly what he wanted he wanted the guy to take the heat stand in front of the media say the same boring stuff that we don’t want to hear anymore you saw you know what in all the time that aaron bloom’s managed the yankees we’ve seen the real aaron boone for about a minute and a half and that was when he went ballistic in the great um in the great situation where he went after the young umpire yeah you know yes that was the real competitive aaron boom where is that aaron bourne now i’m not into it i thought that was a little cheesy too and i’ll tell you why he got all over the young umpire right you know you know to me that’s that’s uh that’s that’s not cool but i don’t mind him for blowing up that’s that’s life i mean at some point maybe going back to the kid and said hey you know i’m sorry about yesterday whatever right but where is that aaron bourne so that’s the yankee and yankee and the irony here of course is the yankee fans are so damn uh passionate about their team and they can’t get somebody who runs their team that’s passionate no not at all and that’s been my problem so i’m so first of all i just want to say this i would be lucky if i know half the baseball you do just just be you’ve been there you’ve done that you’ve done all of it it’s exciting to me that i’m on a completely the same page that you are but i’ve been saying it my track record has been out there now since the beginning of the year and i i remember the first year of aaron boone i said give him time you know let him be and i i picked up little things i said this team is unprepared they’re not prepared they couldn’t feel they can’t do anything not running the bases right and i’m saying something got to be wrong so the beginning of this year i remember i feel like i’ve ranted all year long because i’m watching the games and i’m pulling my own hair out i’m saying what the hell are these guys doing and it’s so frustrating to be a fan and say for the last multiple years you knew what the issues were with this team and they do not address them they don’t address it they got a whole righty lineup they’re relying on the home run ball we’re seeing teams in the postseason now to actually hit with runners in scoring position they make contact they do the little things and you’re seeing year after year the new york yankees do the same thing and i i’ve i’ve talked to glendon rush i’ve talked to um ozzie gee and junior his father been around boone knows there but they all say the same thing you did 100 this is a great baseball family they know their baseball and the one thing that i always say is like you said it drives me mad that where is that aaron boone at how can you sit there and allow yourself to be beaten down by the whole fan base you had a couple of fire boon chants at yankee stadium this year i mean to sit there and just take it and allow this to happen when you know it’s probably not your best way of managing a ball club it baffles me it baffles me it bothers me so much watching his i can’t even watch him anymore i can’t do it i know exactly what he’s saying because i don’t forget for many years i had to charge into those press conferences and uh listen you know i already knew the answers and and and you pinned him that tried to pin him down and stuff and and he just he’s not being real and that’s the problem you got to be you know yankee fans want real people real quick and judge is that kind of j you know i’m not i didn’t mean to rip judge before but i i got to recall what it is you know i was good friends with judge when i covered the yankees we had a lot of off-direct conversations about what’s right with the team what’s wrong with the team yeah and he’s pretty astute he knows what’s going on but it’s easy to fall into the hole and uh and and especially the thing with aaron boone is well he got his three-year extension with it was an option and and it was a kind of a it was it was a um it was a low blow but i put the line in the column because i think sometimes you need to throw a low blow at somebody i said yeah one year for each coach he got fired and uh when a manager doesn’t stand up for his coaches and it turns out there’s a fourth year and i think willets walked away himself so that’s four coaches so it all stopped phil nevin was his best friend after phil nev when when a manager gives up on his coaches that’s when i saw started to really question them and i’ve seen it through the years and it happened with girardi to some of his guys going back to dave island and things like that i still think dave island is one of the best pitching coaches in the game can’t get a job because the nerds are run out all the good pitching coaches um so many good baseball development people and this all starts in this story with the yankees is much deeper than aaron boone it’s in it’s in development it’s how they develop players and it all comes back or you know it all comes back to catchment of course catchment has changed his philosophy the younger brian cashman i knew would listen to the scouts to listen to gene michael when stick passed away he didn’t listen anymore he put the nerds ahead of the staff um ahead of the scouts uh i remember being on a road trip with the yankees five six years ago and i observe every little thing and i’m uh you know i’m i love to watch batman practice that’s why i used to make my living in the old days before the baseball writers gave up the batting cage we used to stand around the batting cage and go to the game naturally the writers aren’t there but if you see old pictures of uh of um writers going all the way back all around the cage that’s when you get your real good conversations you’re watching you’re looking blah blah blah you’re talking to guys you see what they’re doing in bp so i was there on a trip and i had a uh i wanted to he you know one of one of the high-ranking nerds for the yankees was on the trip back i don’t catch him wasn’t on the trip so he was his eyes and ears and i watched this whole trip it was a west coast trip finally like two days before the end of the trip i said to the guy because he had a laptop propped up on the bench uh in the dugout and he’s watching he’s looking doing something with the laptop doing batting practice and i notice it time and time again so finally i asked him and this is what gets me in trouble with people because i don’t give a damn i said hey i’m just curious why why i’m not working anymore you know who knows how these things all develop but my job was eliminated at the post right but i i said i said hey i just got a question for you yeah what’s that what’s what’s that you got i go do you ever watch baseball you always got your nose in that freaking laptop and that was a precursor of what we’ve seen with the yankees what has happened to the yankees and you brought it up yourself about the right-hand lineup that’s been driving me crazy for years so what do they do they go out and get joey gallo a guy who can’t hit can’t make contact the complete opposite of the kind of player they needed plus i actually felt sorry for joey gallo when you watched him play um and you saw you know um you know he was a little quirky and actually my friend bob clapton had a pretty good story at uh nj.com the other day about uh some of the things going on within the clubhouse because there’s a big problem we’re not in the clubhouse anymore right and that’s right what does fans and talk show hosts and everybody else can get on the media especially the beat writers and i’m here to defend the beat writers for you know oh well you don’t really you know you don’t really need to be in the clubhouse you know you hear a lot of no we are the eyes and ears of the fans of course that’s right that’s one of the biggest beefs i have is exactly that’s it and over the last two years now if i were if i was still in the daily day-to-day fight i would be really i’d be i’d be creating trouble i’ll tell you right now right not be standing through this but you know you pass the torch and you move on and um pass up the time so um by not being in the clubhouse the players have run amok now they have the clubhouse to themselves and i’m not even talking about the yankee i’m talking about the mets things i’ve heard about the mets clubhouse you know it kind of shakes my head i don’t want to get into it because i can’t i can’t confirm it i’ve heard it second hand all right say it unless i saw it myself but that’s what we see when we see the clubhouse we see how guys act and and one of the points clappers made was that you know he said that uh you know gallo had a strange way of getting prepared for a game with playing out the uniform and again everybody has perks you know of course of course but these are the little things when you have scouts that know what you’re looking at they let you know about it ahead of time that’s right that’s right just let you know gallop for all his power and everything you know obviously the numbers tell you that but you still tell them he doesn’t make contact he doesn’t make contact and then you tell him he may also have some you know i don’t know if he’s a great fit for new york because it’s a little different in texas blah blah blah whatever it may be so you learn all that information from your scouts if you put your scouts in the back burner and just rely on numbers guys this is the team you get and this is where cashman is right now and it seems like he’s doubled and tripled down on it and i would tell him to his face so it’s not i’m not writing anything i wouldn’t tell him to escape right of course and and that’s the way it is so so you have aaron boone is is out front being the face but the real problem is the way cashman has developed this team yeah uh the the coaches he has hired um the development people i’m hearing horror stories in the minor leagues some of the things that they do in the minors now because don’t forget pete instructional leagues used to be certain things uh minor leagues used to be certain things it’s all changed now right and the people i talk to that see the minor leagues every day tell me that the yankees are one of the worst at it but they don’t get the kind of work that you need to have i mean you’re going to have a great play in bulky don’t get me wrong of course i think you know damon oppenheimer did a great job drafting that kid but you know what bulby’s biggest uh uh trait is he’s a winner he cares about winning yes i read about that recently they said that that that’s one of that is his best trade is that nobody works hard at them and he actually wants to win you can see it on him he wants to win ball games yeah that’s something this team needs don’t they i mean you watch this team play yeah and it’s like they’re playing to lose i’ve said that all year watching games like how are they going to lose this game today it’s like they want to lose games well they put guys in different positions out of place too because nerds think anybody can play anywhere and again i’m not second guessing here a lot of my stuff is mostly first guessing so anybody’s following me knows that uh i made you know i may be wrong on occasion but most of the stuff i’m pretty right on and i the day that they got rid of dd and the day they make labor to shortstop i wrote it i said it i every interview i’ve ever done i said flavor’s not a shortstop yep and he’s gonna be really it’s gonna get in his head there and it’s gonna screw him up and nobody believe me here we are two years later they believe me now and i have that all based on you know what i have that based on when i did a piece on labor when you stole the miners i went down to trenton to see him and again i played the game i know the game and i’m watching him at shortstop and i talked to my uh i had a friend with me and i said to my friend i said this kid’s not a shortstop he’s a third baseman or a second baseman his moves are short on fluid and again i’ve seen don’t forget going back you know we all know jeter of course right uh but you know even with the way back when i had i compared it to when they tried to move robbie alamo robbie allen when he was with the padres they tried to make him a shortstop for a short while and it didn’t work right and he got his head and it screwed him up and then when he became when he went back to second base uh he became a hall of fame second baseman so i have i’m just not saying these things i i have a i have a i had some knowledge on this and i remember talking to robbie about it and i could see the same thing in labor labor was not comfortable at shortstop but here’s where we’re at the yankee nerds think sure stop is not like not that important i remember having this discussion with jeter gdp that’s why jeter was mad because jeter they were trying to take shortstop away from him by trying to position everywhere and he he still positioned himself to the end thank goodness and they made shortstop a zone defense nfl position and and they paid for it now all of a sudden they’re talking about well yeah i guess we could use a short stop you know yeah i mean come on but that’s the mistakes the yankees make it’s a joke but it’s not a joke my my my standard line is the problem with baseball is the people in charge of baseball don’t know baseball it’s really that simple i mean you’re seeing it right i mean you’re seeing it so any fan that watches the yankees we’ve we’ve called this stuff out for years now and again there are your fans that have completely bought in to the analytical driven player you’re joey gallo for your aaron hicks a seven year 70 million dollar deal for aaron hicks when i’m when i first saw this i told i told my team i said this is a deal that you typically see happen with a young prospect who comes up and the team wants to hold on to them for a long time a fight pass their arbitration years and those numbers and hold on to somebody the yankees do this after one decent year from aaron hicks and what is it what is it shown for it i mean anybody sits back and goes that doesn’t make much sense i don’t understand this move because one of the things i’m letting fans know about right now and i’ve been saying this for a while is we talk about defense up the middle the yankees i don’t know how much of that they’re going to have we’ll see how the off-season goes but my understanding is aaron hicks would be right back out there in center field and the one thing that he was good at when he first we all said it his range was good his arm was terrific the last couple of years whether you want to put it on injury or not his range has been terrible ever since he’s decided hey i’m going to be barry bonds and i’m going to build up all this muscle and become a home run hitter and i’m going to be this great on base percentage slugger that analytics loves he’s gotten slower he can’t he his range is terrible in center field his arm obviously had an injury so let’s see what that is but when i look at this for a winning organization a team with all this money a team with a pretty strong farm system you see a young kid like estevan floreal come up who comes up and has speed and is athletic and can run it can move good power to left field and you sit back and you’re watching you’re giving aaron hicks 10 million dollars for what exactly what exactly is aaron hicks providing this balkan truly when he’s injury prone one you already know that so you know you got to have a backup for hicks when at his best he’s on base percentage guy we understand that that’s good i love guys that walk i think it’s a i think it’s a good team for a club the yankees the dynasty years they were great at working pitchers so you know that’s a good thing but when you see brian cashman to see the way he he’s trying to build his roster up a common sense fan could look at this roster and go this is not it and there’s no way you spent all this money to build this roster it’s bad so when i look at it i see guys like aaron hixson you’re right it’s all analytic driven it’s all based off of this idea that they have with these numbers game you say a great thing in the article two you you talk about gary sanchez and you say that there needs to be a they’re waiting for a number of of a group of numbers basically enough numbers to say is this right or wrong but you watch him and you go guys what are you waiting for like what are you doing with this guy he made one of the worst defensive plays i think in the history of catching this year when he caught the ball about 20 feet away from the player and moved away from him and he scores i mean arguably one of the worst plays of all time but then you see the little things him the the way he he presents himself the way he runs the bases the way he misses a strikeout he takes forever to go get a ball so all these little analytical things are are in reality affecting this ball club in a negative way and they don’t recognize it so i got fans telling me now oh pete i’m confident because brian cashman’s learned his lesson he’s going to go out there and make all these changes no he’s not he’s not i don’t see it so that that’s my question to you i mean we see our analytics are negatively affecting the yankees we see some teams do it well we see some teams manage both of those things for you for an example do you think brian cashman is at a point where he recognizes the problems at his roster and we’ll address them i mean i i expect to see aaron hicks in center field and it would have shocked me if sanchez is back to catch it well a lot of that’s a great you know you basically describe it perfectly but a lot of it also is ego that’s the key three-letter word in baseball and brian’s ego makes him give these guys contracts he wants to give hicks this contract because he got he traded for him he wants to make it a great trade yep severina now he got it’s common sense this guy’s coming off of litany of injuries let’s wait it out a little bit yeah you know they haven’t they haven’t fought judge i i mean i mean think about the one guy i’ve been writing this for years and i know he’s had his injury issues but it’s like i had a conversation with judge uh two springs ago and i said to him this is the year he got the uh don’t forget he had the broken rib i mean they call the rib but it’s basic up in here right and uh he dove in a meaningless game against september against the orioles the head first guy i remember that he came up you could tell there was something wrong but then they never really figured out what was wrong so that’s not on aaron judge that’s and uh and but i told judge i said hey when are you going to stop running in the walls and diving for because i talk to players i talk to players like i’m talking to you yeah i said when are you going to stop running in the walls and stop diving for balls against a team you can beat that you’re gonna win anyway in september and you gotta get ready and and he he he just laughed and he and but he has if you look he’s he’s kept himself healthy yeah stop running in the walls on stupid plays he’ll still run on running a wall a play that has to be made in a big game he’ll do it yeah but he’s playing smarter now so he’s the one guy they should have signed way back when to lock it up and get and not only just a financial thing but it gives yankee fans pleasure why not giving the fans pleasure yeah hey we got this guy full career and they’re gonna have his whole career clearly he’s gonna sign with them but there’s a lot of um there’s a lot of uh although i did tell them i said if i were you i’d run out to free agency and go sign with the giants you know it’s funny i say to say i tell my dad i told that this morning i said guys i said they keep waiting on this guy hey he may have the idea that look the angels and the giants would be all over them and they’ll probably give him whatever he wants and you know what but he’s probably thinking legacy pinstripes and all that stuff and i get it but the problem is and and and he has said he’s behind boone so that’s where he’s at but yeah but um if he if he locks himself into a career where they don’t win then then it’s not the career he wants he wants to win chip gypsies and and so they they signed him one guys and let’s not forget the other one you know one of the other elephants there are many elephants in the yankee room and one of the elephants in the yankee room is clint frazier legendary yeah the legendary basketball so well so far it’s burning in my ears i remember cashman saying that when the trade was made legend and that’s why i always throw the quote out there legendary bad speed he has legendary best feet but what’s going on with french bridges through the years i mean he’s a nice kid i went and visited him in atlanta we spent time together did a nice piece on him and but but you know there’s some maturity there that had to be developed and you know the anchors tried very hard with reggie jackson and some other people and boom boom tried very hard i gave him a lot of credit there he tried very hard with ken frazier and i still haven’t given up on him and i wouldn’t give up on him either but my point is you got to know all this going in and you gotta have a game plan to attack this so clint frazier can be the best clint frazier can be same as aaron boone could be the best iron broomie can be and up the middle you nailed it sanchez has gone backwards every year they get another catching uh coach they had the best at gary tuck gary tuck was the best years ago and he got rid of him and they’ve been steadily declined and i i have some friends at major league baseball who actually have that job and they know what they’re doing and i have a good friend who said um he’s actually with another team but he said he would love to work with sanchez because he believes those things he can teach them but will the yankees hire that teacher and will sanchez listen to that teacher at this point i give him one you know and i’m really hesitant to do this but i would give him one last shot simply because i don’t have anything in the hopper that’s going to fix it right now right see a raise the razor team that come up with catchers they they they have a way of doing that the yankees don’t they just stick with sanchez give him another catching instruction instructor confuse the hell out of him even more and make him so he’s doubting himself and plus he’s lazy he appears to be lazy player i mean he can argue that if he wants to me but you know the way he goes like you said the way he goes after boss the things he shows shows he’s he’s he he’s not he’s not he’s not busting at every play like he should be and if your catcher’s not busting it then you got big problems so you go from there the shortstop the problem with labor tourists the center field the problem with aaron hicks and then thinking that judge they they really dodged a bullet this year by playing judge so much in center field that he didn’t get hurt that’s not a mistake yeah they got away with that but that’s a mistake and you know i chucked that up on the mistake side so that’s where they are with that so yes all this and it all gets back to scouting understanding where these guys are best at how to make their best players and um if they can you know they may be able to salvage sanchez but i think it’s going to be a tough road to hoe right now he’s jesus montero they’ve made another cases the yankees are great at um really overestimating the talents of the young players oh big time and then players and it’s hurt them right it’s hurt them in the past i mean we’ve seen them we’ve seen brian cashman on based off reports walk away from deals because he wouldn’t deal guys like eduardo nunez he wouldn’t deal chance adams and these guys are nowhere to be found that dwarf nunes had you know he’s a pretty solid major league player for a while but i mean there’s a lot of guys here that that that we see this on i’m so happy i’m so happy you brought this stuff up um i’ve talked about brian cashman’s ego for a long time and when anybody even talks to me about oh they’re gonna deal hicks i laugh and i go they’re not he loves this guy he’s not going anywhere and should he yeah i mean you know we even seen oh he has no value either now no not at all not at all so you would probably have to eat almost that whole contract and probably throw a halfway decent prospect into two to get a team to even be interested but um when you talked about gary sanchez i actually it’s funny i read a scouting report on the first year he came up when he was hot and he everybody oh we got an mvp catcher you know we got the next piazza as a hidden catcher and in the article the guy scouter report from mlb i forgot exactly who it was but i was reading it the bottom of it talks about gary sanchez as a person and they said if he can stay as a catcher because of his mentality and his his his work ethic if that allows him to stay there so even back then even when he was hot it was known around some that this was a lazy player who didn’t push himself hard enough to be a great catcher so you know you you see then you hear these things and i mean you just watch it year after year after year i remember i think i might have been the only yankee fan that i know of three years ago or so who were saying look if you could get a guy like jt real muto you do it you do it you jump the gun and you do that because this guy’s a winner you could see guys that are winners guys that can handle a pitching staff it’s a bad sign isn’t it when your ace says i’m not thrown to that guy no matter how good of a hitter you guys think he is i’m not pitching to him you guys gave me all this money we can get into a wild card game or a game one he is not in the lineup that’s a to me that’s a major sign of that you need to make a change that speaks volumes and it always and i i pointed to that this year many times and that’s a problem on two levels pete that’s a problem with sanchez it’s also a problem with derek cole right paul i don’t care if you’re that good and i know i’ve known him for years i remember talking to him with the pirates visiting him with the pirates going down to seeing in houston and you know brian mccann was there and i remember brian brian spoke highly of me to cole so we had a great conversation and um garrett cole is his own worst enemy in that he he thinks too too much he’s over he’s overthinking everything yeah a spider attack has something to do with it clearly but i don’t like the fact that he doesn’t pitch to sanchez right if i’m boom now i i get it with certain pictures through the years i’ve seen it through the years but i give it i give it a shot here and i i and if i’m the boss i tell them i said you guys get yeah i’m gonna leave you guys in the room you get the same page you figure it out you two guys figure it out yeah and gary you got 324 whatever you got i forget um you know it all it all runs together um all those millions figure it out pitch to this guy work on the same page get to know it that’s what spring training is for but they don’t work you don’t work on these it sounds silly but what do these guys do in spring do they just get like a guitar and sit around a campfire for a little while is that what it is they go different fields and they do their hitting and they do their things and they you know but you you gotta here’s a tip to any young writers or reporters when you go to swing training you can’t really watch what you’re doing uh as a group i mean you do watch what they’re doing at group just certain things but you watch what they’re doing individually and i’ll give you an example i’m i’m in the i would always stay behind when they were on the road because then you get to see the guys that are working back and usually for the most part in swing training it’s become such a thing now where the star players don’t travel that much so i would have better access to star players so i’m sitting in the dugout on the backfield and i’m watching dj le mayhew he’s taking a million backhands up up the middle having a coach hitting him then i won’t mention the player but another player comes up to him an outfielder after he’s done with that work and again they’re they’re staying back they’re not they’re not up with the team and and the outfielder goes hey hey hey dj let’s uh let’s go in the outfield and let’s go shag some balls and uh you know have some fun whatever i could forget the exact conversation but i was close enough to hear it and dj said no i got work to do then he went over to third base and did another million you know took another ball yeah that’s the ball player you saw it there by his work ethic and of course the next game i remember this specifically first ball hit to him was a shot up the middle that he backhanded and threw the first base and this is a the exhibition game is a great play and that was what he was working on the day before yeah so that’s that’s how you get a feel for players on what they work for in spring training and what they do and the other not not to degrade the other outfield the outfielder was a hard worker right okay it was just that uh you know it is a little bit of a human tendency you know let’s not go too hard here and this is after they hit and did all the other stuff so so that’s so it’s been training it’s the individual work that’s important and i go all you know say what you want about a-rod but i remember the days when i used to go talk to a-rod i used to get there at 7 00 a.m because he’s already got some work done right you know he would he would he would get work done it’s you know he’d be he he’d be maybe a third into his workday by 7 a.m wow and that yeah that’s and that’s and yeah jeter of course did his thing peter’s a little different animal jesus wanted to deal with you know the daily stuff and get it figured out but he didn’t want to jeter never wanted to um you know he he wouldn’t overwork but he worked hard right he had a good plan always had a good plan and those are the players that do it now then you get to coaches i just said this on a podcast yesterday um you know it’s so disappointing how they cover baseball now especially when you get to the world series in some respects because there’s so many great stories going to uh ryan washington i remember ron washington i used to go to think games in orlando uh and i get there early because your clubhouse is open early and the uh the braves are always good about having an early open clubhouse so you get there by eight but i would show up at seven and i’d walk through the center field gate because that’s that was the only access point because the other one wasn’t open and the sun be rising and then all sudden you’d see ron washington working with an infielder albies or middle infielder doing that ron washington stuff where hits the ball and have this you know the the uh the flat glove or whatever they use at 7 00 am 7 30 8 o’clock you know that’s who you see who’s doing your work and you hire coaches like that that even work yeah that’s the yankees haven’t done that they haven’t done that they’re missing out on that and one of the one of the things that that uh i think it was a brandon cuddy who put this out there beat reporter for the yankees now uh mentioned that the yankees are looking for more of an enforcer as a bench coach somebody who could stand up to the players a little bit and and i tell you kevin man when i heard that again it’s another situation where i just want to rip my hair out because i’m sitting there saying that what is the manager good for you know i i mean all the i can’t imagine and i went on a i remembered it was a post game aaron boone got thrown out of a game and i tell this to every guest i have because to today i can’t believe he said it when he said that the major league umpire he felt bullied by the umpire he felt the umpire was bullying him and i i i said man for a great organization they have just been leveled down completely today that that he can actually come to the media and say this when this is not some new thing that a manager gets ejected and may feel a certain way but to sit there and say a major league umpire bullied you you’re the you’re the manager of the most prestigious organization in sports history this is this is and i told i told everybody i said this is where this team is this is who they are this is who they’re becoming and it drives me mad because again this is you know this this company that i’m that i’m building up and we got a great team here some more great people joining in january focus is on the yankees you know that is our focus this is who we love and and we’re just honest i’ll never sugarcoat anything i’ll never sit back like some yankee fans and praise cashman for anything he does i think he’s i truly i believe he’s one of the most overrated gender managers in baseball and and i see that because i see other guys go out there and they restructure a roster quickly in an offseason they can do it this guy he’ll make one or two moves like like somebody asked me the other hey pete is you know they go out there to get corey seeger we’re on our way aren’t we i said no no no we still have issues that we talked on my last podcast we said look if this starting line doesn’t have four or maybe even five new names and a good role player on the bench i just see the same crap happening again that happened this year there’s no leader who is the leader in the yankees you know they they had that article too you mentioned that bob clappage put out about brett garner trying to lighten the mood and you know being a jokester and a prankster but he’s been this is oh wait he’s not a clubhouse cancer you know he’s been there everybody knows that he’s been there for a long time but are there leaders are are there players i seen judge and rizzo do that a little bit towards the end of the year where they’re kind of pulling guys aside talking about a pitcher but who in that clubhouse takes the leadership brains who in that clubhouse talks to a glaber you know there was even the thing with marcus tim’s i think you probably saw this when he talked about labor towards and he said he sits down with him and he tells him that he’s great and that they don’t have any other options and he has to be a shortstop i mean what is that can you imagine old school baseball players hearing that and saying what in the hell has happened to this game and that’s the stuff that drives me mad and it should it should drive you mad and there’s you know a couple points there one of the things i’ve never liked about boone is his passive aggressive nature and i think that’s a real problem and and you nailed it with the thing about bullying you know you know what if you got a problem with the empire get in his face and go right don’t come to the media whining that’s that’s but that’s where we’re at uh cashman um are getting uh getting uh getting a uh enforcer well who was the enforcer on this team it was still nevin so you know and now the next enforcers or anybody who’s going to get hired and they get you know they you know could they hire bobby dickerson was that recent hire or am i am i getting my teams mixed up here yeah i haven’t i haven’t heard that for the yankees yeah but you know he’s that type of coach you know um um so so um nevin but you’re going to be thinking yourself as that well geez the last enforcer got fired so i got to watch myself here and you take your lead from your manager now my guess is they will be a little bit more a little tougher on their players now and and and that’s the signal that cashman is sending which a little too late but i agree with you on you need to revamp the braves the break just do some things right they do a lot of things wrong it got hurt a lot of good development people a lot of good scouts but they they rebuilt the team on the fly i remember having a conversation with with kashmir five years ago and said brian i don’t understand when you have weaknesses why don’t you just go to the bad gms in the middle of the year they’re looking to unload really good players and um you know he basically has tried to do that but his he comes up with a gallow instead of coming up with a solar or a uh jorge solar or adam frazier adam frazier was a guy i was begging for because he just makes contact he’s allergic he makes contact he plays all over adam frazier was in the wrong the worst spot adam she could have gone up to was the padres yeah that’s right because he upset that the the chemistry of that team wasn’t his fault but he did but again another gm that is totally overrated aj preller what a joke he is don’t get me started on him and and the media protects him for the most part but you know he wins every winter we got to hear that oh aj feller won the winter but here’s the thing with the yankees i gotta be very careful here a singer would help there’s no doubt secret would help right for a couple of years and then they just now you know how the yankees always think ahead oh we could put it by third blah blah blah um a very smart scout told me this the other day so one of the problems with the yankees is they keep thinking they can bring in a leader and you you got to build up the team now they did they did get lucky with rizzo yeah rizzo is a leader and if you noticed pete all the conversations when the the the when the high school pitching coach would come out and talk to these guys um again you know i’m not there every day so just from a distance it looks to me like he could have done a much better job of pitching even though they gave him a lot of praise because first of all he never got if i got my 324 million dollar picture not pitching right that’s what you got to fix and uh they they don’t know how to fix they’re not mechanics they are shapers they’ll tell them to shape this pitch their sequence this pitch they’re not like brent strom who told um who got garcia after garcia got hammered in the end and in the uh alcs he um he fixed his feet he had him he he totally had him standing in a different way on the on the uh on the um on the rubber so he wasn’t putting pressure on his knee that’s a pitching coach french driver so those are the kind of guys you gotta find and and uh so rizzo here’s what i noticed watching the games every time this pitching coach would come out and say whatever you had to say riso would hang around a little bit longer pull pull the pitcher aside and add something to it and rizzo from people i know in chicago and i’ve known rizzo since he was on the wbc italian team way back when and um rizzo is that kind of leader i mean um sometimes he wants to be maybe a little too literish but that’s okay i like that thank you probably need that you know they probably need that and he actually in my mind he was a good acquisition by cashman yeah and he also was good for that team and giving him a full spring training with the team will be better off because they don’t have a leader on that infield but until i see him getting labor’s face on a lazy play then i know he’s not you know he can only do so much at this point right and uh so so when they add these veteran players there has to be and the word i’m looking for there has to be already an in team uh set up code of conduct you can’t you can’t expect this guy to come in it’s like with a ride when they brought a rod in it didn’t just click right away because you know superstars think a different way and and you got to build your own superstar up so so that player should be judged right now um if they think they can cure this by just getting a shortstop they’re totally wrong um the way they use their pictures that’s going to be a huge thing until we get derek hall right and this is what i say gary cole needs to man up until he man’s up they got a problem and the insight on derek cole is this he you know he’s a nice kid maybe thinks a little too much uh but he had a friend you know one of his kids was close friends to matt keogh uh uh a kid so mackiel pitched for the age for many years an incredibly smart baseball pitcher type of guy knowledge a lot of knowledge well matt and um and you never read this before but matt and uh cole became friends and he became his mentor in a lot of ways and he would he would just talk to him straight up and say hey you got to use your fastball more what are you doing here you know and cole believed in him so he had that person to go to and this was during his time in houston but then then matt passed away you know uh suddenly and so he lost his mentor the yankees have found a mentor for call carl hasn’t found a mentor himself and i noticed i’m talking about david cohn yeah you know that you know you can tell the way they and i love david but you can tell the way david’s broadcasting your game with all the analytics and stuff he’s basically begging front officers hey guys i know pitching and i know all these things me hire me please hire me you know yeah like your manager pitching coach whatever uh pitching uh in charge of pitching uh so so but that’s my point is cole needs to have someone that he can lean on that knows and it’s been there and until he man’s up i mean it was you know i don’t want to hear about the hamstring i don’t want to hear about the hamstrings i agree i agree i encourage shelling with pitching with the bloody sock so yep you know you find a way you find a way and um uh so so that’s another one of their big problems so they have all these big bombs you’re being you’re bringing them and again i don’t know that much about seeger i know his brother pretty well his brother um his brother is not very you know he’s the one who hasn’t talked to the gm in in seattle for years the part of william talked to him because his brother’s a very honest guy so yeah secretly younger brother so i would think he’s the same kind of guy and of course you add a secret you got to be better there’s no doubt about it of course right maybe it will help but it’s not a cure all and that and the yankees got to stop looking at a free agent here or there as being the cure-all exactly and also brian and here’s the other key i meant to mention this earlier brian cashman needs a gm told me years ago that he didn’t like dealing with brian castron because brian always has to win the trade yeah yep that’s right that’s right it always goes sometimes you got something to get something and and uh and uh and those those gm’s that try to win all the time what do you see they always they always start making trades with the same guys right and what is it what do the yankees do they make so many trades with the same kind of teams you know all the time all the time and again that’s you can you can at this point you can name them you know who the guys are so when you start looking at it’s funny because i tell somebody hey when i look at catchers they say well who’s out there i say i said well we could go back to the pirates and get a jacob stallings we trade for them all the time so why not i mean exactly him and sharington you know their friends kevin towers used to be a good friend of ryan’s and i love kevin towers passed away cancer yeah kevin i thought was a good good um for brian was a good um sounding board you know and i think that that’s hurt brian too when he’s lost a guy like that that he could rely on so again there’s a million things going on here uh and here’s the history and the the other uh you know the last time i’ll use the expression the other elephant in the room was is could you imagine if the mets got it together this year what a what an opportunity i know we’re talking yankees but we got to talk mets here what an opportunity the mets had this year to take over in new york no doubt about it no doubt about it they did completely they could make the right move and get the right guy in charge i’m not saying they will but if they do the yankees could be yesterday’s news really quickly in here yeah well you made a great point in your article too you just basically talk about the yankees are continuing to trend downwards i mean they are and one of the things i bring up is that you know a lot of yankee fans are and it’s fine to be optimistic you know it’s the off season what’s the point of ripping your hair out of being upset now when you have the whole year to do that but um one of the big things that i remember that i was talking to a few people about was that you got to remember how much better these other ball clubs in the division are getting too the blue jays are getting better the rays are always there the red sox are getting better the yankees are falling in that pack and we see these star names right we see the sands we see we got coal but we don’t have the role guys we don’t have those little guys that move runners over we we don’t do that enough and it it’s it’s a glaring weakness that they don’t address and it could be addressed so this is one of the things i’m actually gonna have a video about this today i i said this is to me as a yankee fan arguably the most important offseason of brian cashman’s career a couple of reasons why free agent class is phenomenal and the yankees we know obviously have money but there’s also a ton of opportunity to move salary if he’s a smart enough general manager he could really move sally move some of these players your chapman you can move um sanchez potentially there’s a lot of money that you can move that and i’m saying not move all these guys but there’s options that move some money around to add additional from free agency but then there’s also a pool of prospects that you have there’s also some some utility type guys you can move around to me this is the off season where you truly see where brian cashman’s mind is if he can go out there and make a trade that some of us aren’t thinking about some people brought up to me oh matt olsen is going to be a guy that uh first of all the a’s don’t have to trade him that’s one two they’re not gonna accept scrap heaps and three would brian cash and be willing to say yeah what trader jason dominguez and louise heal and somebody else for one of the best first bases of baseball i don’t see him doing that and on top of it yankee fans you got to remember there’s other teams out there that will be interested also it’s not just the yankees playground here so to me i don’t know if you agree with that sentiment that this is an extremely important off-season for where the yankees are going to trend for the next couple of years but i i believe that i i think this is a very very very important offseason yeah on two levels and and the first thing i can predict this already because i know how brian works my guess is the yankees will sign robbie ray i ho i almost hope so i i’ve actually been a fan of but here’s the thing too about ray and i told fans this if he comes here and he’s worse he probably will be because he gives up homers he’s a fastball pitcher so he’s going to give up the home run but i i do feel like and and maybe you disagree with this but i do feel like you got to have somebody behind coal that in a sense you can almost balance that pressure yes and is robbie ray that guy though that’s what we don’t know that’s the question but i’m saying my point is that i can be you know you can read catch me like a book he’ll want to get robbie ray to hurt the blue jays a little bit he’ll pay the money and the question is will that fastball work in in yankee stadium right and also i think pete walker the blue jays pitching coach is one of the best in the game and i think he really helped robbie ray and robbie ray has to be very careful here i mean you always follow the money it’s mlb but robbie ray has to make that decision where it’s best for him yeah and he really i think he fits well with that team and what you said about the yankees is true but just imagine this too imagine if the blue jays have another good off season that’s right that’s right because they’re you know that the the big joke comment that got us all going was uh you know uh uh boone saying the rest of the league is caught up to the end years ago you know here’s the stat aaron just so you know since 2003 the yankees have won as many world series as the marlins one go one yep yeah yeah so they caught 20 years ago kevin you you’ve been around covering the yankees for a long time especially the most recent years what is that gap what is that specific gap that he saw because there’s no longer money right there’s other teams out there doing it bigger than the yankees we know that what what is this this and i i i guess that’s what drives a lot of yankee fans crazy is when you hear aaron boone talk and catch me like what world are you in what what games are you watching that we’re not seeing here there’s two things with that i think in a way i think that’s a way to say geez we’re not bringing young talent that other teams are and that’s a slam on maybe uh drafting how they drafted but also where they draft you know they they just have that problem where they drive it’s you know and you know that’s just so funny like just little things no a little thing but like you know everybody gets on uh dan duquette for baltimore right right right right of course you know he’s one of the guys i would love to see that mets hire but of course they probably won’t have the brains to do it dan did an unbelievable job he he combines analytics and and and and and real baseball and he did an unbelievable job at the red sox set them up for that first run the theo got all the credit for it and um and then uh and even in baltimore little things like mullins being a late draft pick i can’t wait around but austin hayes they got a lot of guys out there that are that are doing well they got and they got a pretty strong farm system coming up right and the yankees you know they can’t afford to make mistakes so when you know judge was a great draft pick um and they and they drafted a kid like garrett whitlock right obviously you can just see you watch him one time and just see that this kid’s got it not only does he care he’s not satisfied you know he’s one of those guys that’s not satisfied that’s what i see when i see him and again over my shoulder you see the plaque for the new york state baseball hall of fame i got abducted this year the reason why i got inducted i see things and and what do the yankees do what are the nerves dude the nerds lose them in the rule five draft so if they call me chrisky and nelson and all these other guys over a guy like whitlock and if you only got a limited you know you got to get lucky in the draft sometimes and i noticed for a fact i mean it just just saw i i didn’t know for a pure fact the yankees loved trout if they had the opportunity they would have had him everybody says that now but i knew for a fact the yankees were there but you know there was the angel connection and the yankees knew he’d probably go to the angels and that’s what happened but imagine if they got a trout you know then you wouldn’t hear herself excuse me um the rest of the team’s catching up to him i think they’re talking talent-wise and evidently the yankees are puffing your chest out saying that you know they were ahead of things and certain things uh nerve-wise but they haven’t been so it’s a joke it’s it’s a typical yankee comment that we’re seeing now where there’s no sense of reality to what they’re doing makes you shake your head that’s why you walk out of press conferences when aaron boone’s saying what the hell’s he talking about and then uh and uh and and really it’s only gonna change if the yankee fans make a change this is on the yankee fans now yankee fans need to step back and say am i going to spend my money for this team and that’s where we’re at really the bottom that’s bottom line yeah i got attacked when i said that um i said that on twitter and i had a lot of people go at me and go this is not the way of a fan and i’m sitting there saying are you nuts are you mad this is this is what the fans are supposed to do when you okay for example you go to a store you’ve had a bad experience with a let’s say a vacuum cleaner a certain brand you don’t usually go to that one first to buy that one you look at other options so i’m not saying oh hey yankee fans go become a race fan go let’s move to florida let’s become a race fan not saying that at all i’m simply saying like you just said think before you go spend your money for this club if you don’t like the product you’re upset with the product maybe it’s not best you go to you know 12 games this year maybe you dial that back a little bit maybe you watch from home you know there’s a cup there’s a lot of different things you could do but i mean i i’m i just want to say to um thank you for this interview truly um i’m so happy to have you know you here and and your thoughts are are right there with with where i’ve been and where my team has been um with the frustration of this club and the things they’re doing the things they’re not doing they they have talent they do um one of the i guess just before you go here one of the things that frustrated me more than anything all year was it it feels like there’s a coordination now between yankee writers obviously the yes network and the team where they can’t push back too hard or they’re they don’t want to it it’s concerned to push back hard on this team one of the main things i remember and i i went nuts about this i i couldn’t believe what i was hearing the little time frame there when the yankees called up estevan floriel they called it greg allen and only thing these guys did was be who they were they could go first to third they can score they could steal a base or two they could play you know common baseball that a lot of us like to see on a team at least a few players right and i’m watching the game and i hear michael k go oh look they’re playing boom booney ball and i said are these guys out their mind you mean he couldn’t bunt all year while gleber’s been struggling he couldn’t bunt somebody said well pete didn’t have the roster i said guys look hold on a second gleber torres is bad at about 220 all you you mean to tell me glebe taurus couldn’t lay down a bunny probably doesn’t know how to to be fair but then you got a guy like brett garner who had the fifth most at bats on the team when i did a video about this which was mid-year no barely any sack bonds doesn’t do anything so i i guess it it even it makes me angry that we don’t have that representation anymore i don’t feel as a fan i can say i know in the post game these beat writers saw what i saw and are going to call it out i hear michael k and somebody my friend told me the other day hey watch the michael k show that he got boone on i said i don’t want to hear that i’m not going to listen to it i don’t want to hear that because i know what it’s going to be when he mentioned that boone ball i said my god like these guys got to be paid to hype these guys up and it just absolutely stuns me that as a fan we don’t have that no more we really don’t have a beat squad that will ask those tough questions and and really bring our perspective into that room yeah well that’s that’s on the beat guys they have to understand where they’re at and the questions they have to ask and also understand that um you know you are representing the fan that’s the way i when i always went into a press conference or talking to players individually in the clubhouse i always look at like i’m here representing myself in the paper i’m working for but i’m also representing the fans these are the questions the fans have and you have to have that approach if you don’t have that approach you’re missing out it’s different for broadcasters because now the broadcasters have never been there they’re hired by the team obviously right this is across the board uh some of these broadcasters some of these teams are getting you know they never question anything you know and you know all is gravy sunshine you know and everything else with michael i’ve known michael a long time he used to be a b writer there were times where i know he’s frustrated by things and he brings it up on the air and he and he i don’t know if he gets pushed back or whatever but i love when he does because that’s that’s that’s the real michael k and um and you need to have that and it’s a good to exchange those thoughts and even uh a point counterpoint is never bad and you can do that with all the different broadcasters like like it’s funny when you listen to a mets game they’re messing the same way like their broadcasters are very good too but there’ll be times in a mets broadcast but all you hear is keith hernandez sign when you hear him sigh that’s his way of saying what the hell is going on yeah you know so and i think the yankees try to bring that up too but it’s it’s it’s a situation it’s got to be it’s got to be it’s got to get better there’s got to be and i think the other thing is beat guys michael k they’re dealing with the same gm for 25 years so they know where the power lies yeah so they you know if you’re a beat guy and you’re you got to come up with information you know you got you got to uh you gotta you gotta really uh yeah sorry about that you gotta really you gotta you gotta you know you gotta you gotta keep you know you gotta keep your sources available you can’t just burn them but at the same time um when i’m seeing with the yankees now when big news breaks on the yankees it’s it’s usually broken by a national reporter that’s right yeah somebody else yeah and that tells me that cashman is going to those guys so what the hell you got nothing to lose anyway yeah that was right that’s right you know that’s it’s you know at some point you just gotta you gotta suck it up and move on and uh but it gets back to my original point this is very important for fans and i have to understand this and the writers have to understand you need to get back in the clubhouse that’s step one get back and club out get out get some honest answers get some honest questions and then it’s not all choreographed because right now and the yankees love to do this pr wise it’s all choreographed certain guys who don’t want to come out won’t come out you can’t ask them no questions i really i in some ways i feel sorry i couldn’t beat guys because it’s uh it’s much harder than when you have access when you don’t have access so you have less opportunity to to find things out but if you really think about it you could go a different direction now and maybe get information via different ways and that could be exciting too so so this team they showed us who they are they didn’t deserve to be in the same field with the red sox you know they swept the red sox late in the year everybody thought hunky dory they’re going to be great alex poorer and i said it from day one alex i tried to get alex for hired by the mets before they hired calloway i’ve known alex forever you know and said which one about the houston situation but alex is alex knows what the word compete that means yep so so does so does um kevin cash yeah in tampa don’t you notice don’t you notice pete haven’t you noticed how kevin cash and cora they love to beat the yankees of course of course i think you’re close friends and and there is a network i get it but it’s got to start there the yankees need to get a competitor driving the team and then and and and go from there and the yankee media needs to call out all the mistakes and consistently call out the mistakes and move moved in that direction and if you lose sources you lose sources that’s life yeah it happens so kevin before i let you go i do have one more question i thought about this earlier i forgot to ask it do you think that there will be a change where guys like dusty baker going to the world series tony larussa coming back doing a good job with chicago we hear that ozzy guillen was interviewed by the san diego padres for their open manager spot do you think we will see in this game more of the old school mentality coming back and guys that could blend the analytics but not really just rely on that do you think there’ll be a point where baseball will not really revert back but you’ll see guys who have kind of been there and done that manage clubs again and kind of come back because i even talked about uh guys like tony pena who you don’t see no more who always thought was just a good baseball guy i think he was good for the yankees um are you do you expect to see something like that maybe your um your uh managers from the past that maybe are on broadcast now um come back uh buckshow walters for example uh ozzy guillens do you think you’ll see these guys maybe get more jobs now you got a dusty baker going to the world series i think it depends on is swinging back a little bit but it’s going to be difficult because the guys making these decisions all come from the same background for the most part and they don’t want to give up the power you’re dealing with a lot of 35 year old guys that went to harvard they played or maybe went to a division three school and played baseball i think they know it all and they want to have puppets they want to have puppets and yeah that’s what you’re seeing in new york a puppet you know aaron’s a puppet i don’t care what you say it’s puppet and uh um i’m hoping but i don’t know if it’ll happen we need to get first of all to start right now if the mets imagine if the mets turned around tomorrow and hired some of the people i mentioned or maybe did a tandem and hired sabian and bocce that would be a great combination perfect yeah it’d be great but but they you know and anybody i don’t care what you say anybody can can um can bring these two things together analytics and baseball it’s not that hard it’s not i don’t want to hear i don’t want to hear about so until the 35 year old gms and and here’s the problem i don’t want to make this answer too long but like the indians the guy they the indians or like everybody comes from the indian scenes and gets jobs everywhere they hired the guy in minnesota a few years ago fowlery yeah he had never really made a trade did anything with the indians he gets he gets twins job and i said at the time you watch the twins go down and they the first year with terry ryan’s guys they did okay but now since valve he’s been in charge they’ve gone downhill those guys are everywhere now you got aj preller in san diego the the the dodgers dodgers screwed up their chances this year by getting too tricky with the pitching just let these guys pitch you know and uh you’re raised usually here and there and then you know and servers are here i don’t mind an occasional thing and cory does that too but you do it you do it uh you do it in the big in the world series maybe and maybe if you to get to the world series a game or two so so they’re all playing from the same playbook and the last thing these young nerds want is is real baseball people back in the game and you’ve seen commissioner too and here’s the final thought on that he’s always telling owners you know uh from what i’m hearing in meetings uh i’ve had a few people tell me this he’s telling them you know you don’t need that many scouts you don’t need you need that many analytical people they want to trim it back and um and now we’re betting coming aboard that’s a whole nother situation oh yeah and the cba and things like that so so i think until you know it’s great with dusty i love dusty i said it was a great move when they made it i wrote about it i was there the first day when he got hired i had a great conversation with dusty i go all the way back to way back with dusty and um you know he was a big big uh you know he just he doesn’t know so many people know so many subjects and can talk to he can talk to each player individually which is huge and um you know he’s a big john wooden proponent so he’s got the pyramid of success dusty’s one of those guys that makes you feel better about yourself but at the same time demands he’ll let you know when you fail and that’s the kind of guys you have to hire that’s right you can hire all the kiss asses you want but you got to also be able to these guys need to you know ch chew on you if you need you need so i’m hoping that happens this off season is a great test for it and i want to see a few more guys hired before i’m saying depending on the pendulum has actually swung yeah definitely well kevin thank you so much for joining us i greatly appreciate it i’m sure the fans are going to appreciate this too because um your knowledge is obviously um is is well known so again thank you for joining us today enjoy it pete and once the yankees make some moves we’ll talk again of course thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music]
