If Mat Latos wants a return ticket to the majors, this probably isn’t the way to go about it.

Latos, who pitched for eight MLB teams over nine seasons, sparked a wild brawl on Saturday between the New Jersey Jackals and Rockland Boulders in a Can-Am League game at Yogi Berra Stadium, which is on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, N.J.

The fight begins 1:07 into the video at the top of this story.

Here are the details of the fight, which took place in the sixth inning, per USA Today:

After Latos’ catcher was knocked over at the plate on a throw home from left field, Latos, now a pitcher for the New Jersey Jackals of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball, followed it up against the next Rockland Boulders batter with one pitch inside and one over the head.

Then, a few words were exchanged between Latos and several Boulders players and the benches cleared. Latos body-slammed an opposing player and several punches were thrown from various players during the brawl that calmed after about a minute.

Here are more details, per Deadpsin:

Both Latos and Ryan Deemes, the Rockland reliever who first charged the mound and ended up in Latos’ meaty clutches, were ejected. Latos, 30, is trying to work his way back to the majors, and has a 5.14 ERA in 21 innings with the Jackals.

Yanks mailbag: Andujar for deGrom?

Latos last pitched in the majors in 2017 for the Toronto Blue Jays. He broke into the majors in 2009 with the San Diego Padres. After that came stints with the Reds, Marlins, Dodgers, Angels, White Sox and Nationals.

He made 197 appearances over those nine seasons, starting 189 games. Latos has a career record of 71-59 with a 3.64 ERA.

For what it’s worth, the Jackals ended up beating the Boulders, 5-3. The independent league teams will meet again next week for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday, June 19.
