Mets’ Jacob deGrom on Yankees trade rumors: ‘That’s out of my control’

Jacob de Grom, the subject of trade rumors, said he’d be open to a long-term contract with the Mets. New York must decide if it wants to sell off deGrom and/or Noah Syndergaard before the July 31, 2018 (7/31/18) non-waiver trade deadline. The Mets enter the All-Star break in last place in the National League East.

WASHINGTON — New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom is rumored to be available in trade in the midst of a disappointing season for his team, but he said he’s happy where he is.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here,” deGrom told NJ Advance Media.

As for a possible trade to the first-place New York Yankees, “that’s out of my control. It’s something they have to decide.”

Largely due to the lack of run support, deGrom has just five wins even though he leads the National League with an ERA of 1.68. He is the Mets’ only representative at this year’s All-Star Game.

Is Machado sending Yankees hints?

Just as the Yankees in 2016 landed shortstop Gleyber Torres in a trade for closer Aroldis Chapman, the Mets are pondering whether to trade deGrom or their other ace, Noah Syndergaard, for some other team’s top prospects in order to quickly rebuild after originally expecting to contend in 2018.

The Yankees, in particular, are in need of starting pitching if they are to defeat the Boston Red Sox and win the American League’s eastern division.

The Houston Astros also have been mentioned as a landing spot for deGrom.

Meanwhile, deGrom was quoted in June after yet another Mets loss as saying, “I’m tired of losing, to be honest.”

Even so, deGrom has said he is interested in signing a multiyear contract to stay with the Mets past 2020, when he could become a free agent.

“We’ve said before that we’d be open to signing a long term with the Mets,” he said. “We’ll just have to see what happens.”
