WFAN’s Mike Francesa sets launch date for new app: When is it?

WFAN host Mike Francesa’s much-anticipated “Mike’s On” app will launch at the end of August, he said Tuesday on Twitter, meaning it should be live right in time for football season.

The revolution is almost here.

WFAN’s Mike Francesa plans to launch his much-anticipated “Mike’s On” app at the end of August, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.

The soon-to-be National Radio Hall of Famer had promised the app, which he has promoted ever since he made his controversial return to radio earlier this spring, would become available before the start of the fall and football season. If things go according to plan, it will arrive right before the gun.

Francesa has made it very clear one of, and perhaps the main, driving reasons behind his decision to return to WFAN was the ability to have synergy between his on-air show, the station and the app, which he and sports and entertainment agency CAA will be launching along with the FAN.

Francesa has been in the app game before – all true Francesa fans remember the “Audio Roadshow” app, which was heralded as revolutionary at the time (well, at least by him) and then quickly fizzled out. Accordingly, many are skeptical about this app. However, it seems like there’s a bit more thought, and importance, with this one.

Francesa has said his Sunday NFL show will be streamed exclusively on the app (it will also carry his daily show), and he wants to do more with audio and video. Francesa hinted upon his return he might try to launch careers for young radio talkers on the app (a potential Francesa-centric in-app station?), among other things.

Francesa has also said the app will be “mostly subscription” content, but the business model remains unclear. There has been speculation the app could carry archived “Mike and the Mad Dog” audio.
